Edgemont’s Sofia Gisbert to Compete in State Gymnastics Championship

Edgemont will have its eyes on Sofia Gisbert in the state high school gymnastics championship March 4 in Buffalo.

The Edgemont High School sophomore earned a spot on the Section 1 state team with a floor-exercise routine that scored 9.325 out of a top grade of 10 in the sectional championship in Mahopac on Feb. 9. While she will compete in that one event, which is her specialty, she excelled in other competitions at the sectional meet:

• Vault: 8.05.

• Bars: 8.2.

• Beam: 8.8.

• All Around: 34.375.

Gisbert continues to practice 18 hours each week to prepare for the state championship, presented by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA). She has been practicing gymnastics since the age of 2, and was first asked to compete on a team at age 5.

“I was always hanging on the monkey bars,” the athlete said. “I needed a place to direct my energy.”

At age 9, she joined World Cup Gymnastics in Chappaqua, where she still practices. She says participation on Edgemont’s team has taken her to many meets that have sharpened her skills and boosted her confidence.

“I have become a bit less nervous and I know to trust myself,” she said. “Throughout this season, I definitely have improved because of that.”

Superintendent Dr. Kenneth R. Hamilton was thrilled with the news of Gisbert’s accomplishment.

“It brings the school community together when our young athletes represent our school district with such distinction!” he said. “Bravo, Sofia! We will all be cheering you on!”
